Verdict : Only good for buying JAV photobooks and magazines. A bit on the expensive side.
If you’ve had any interest in Japanese stuff like teaching English in Japan then you’ve probably found out Peter Payne and his company JList. JList provides the western world with unique wacky goods from Japan including Japanese JAV goods. The selection of videos is very poor not to mention the stock levels of them and they are priced very high. What is good about JList are the magazines and photobooks they have of JAV idols. You can get a hold of popular JAV magazines like Video boy, Urecco and more and even get monthly subscriptions to them. There is also a nice catalog of hentai manga and artbooks if you are into that sort of thing.
ActionJAV
My Rating: 
Verdict : Large library of high quality downloadable videos. Great for getting older JAV titles from specific actresses. Excellent value. Library not as huge as I anticipated.
ActionJAV has an awesome collection of downloadable JAV titles in either realmedia or avi format and categorised under headings such as nurses, teachers, sperm play, racequeens etc. There are nice reviews and preview pictures that give you a good feel for the video you’re interested in.
Rob of ActionJAV was nice enough to give me a test account so I could experience ActionJAV firsthand. I must say it was very exciting being able to download whatever titles I wanted after looking at the site for years! ActionJAV is also interested in sponsoring Sweatpig.
I wasn’t able to view the realmedia files due to some problem with Ubuntu Linux but the avi files worked no problem and downloaded pretty quickly at around 400-500 KBytes / second. Sizes of the avi files were around ______ Mbytes.
There was an uncensored section but most of it was really old stuff and nothing like the great uncensored stuff around today like tokyo-hot, asian-hot etc.
Checking the updates from time to time, I could see that there were four to five videos being added a day. That’s around 150 new videos a month for your viewing pleasure.
There are two types of accounts:
- Monthly VIP Membership at $34.95 USD
- Prepaid Digital Express account at $29.95 USD
With the prepaid account you get a 15GB allocation to download as many avi videos as you like. Once 30 days have passed or you have used up your 15GB allocation the account expires. I didn’t come close to the 15GB limit, but I only downloaded a few titles.
The monthly VIP membership enables you to stream or download high quality realmedia videos but you can’t download the avi files. You can also access the massive picture library which has some hard to find pictures of various JAV idols.
You could spend hours just wading through the site and reading the reviews. The main draw I see with ActionJAV is being able to download lots of older videos from older JAV stars which may be hard to find elsewhere.
JSexNetwork
Another big and professional looking site providing downloadable movies and pictures to a western audience. The video content is not updated as much as ActionJAV and not as comprehensive but they make up for it by provided urabon (underground uncensored Japanese porn), gravure photo sets of mainstream gravure/bikini idols and photo set collections of JAV idols.
For video downloads, ActionJAV definitely seems better, but for pictures JSexNetwork seems better.
At one point in time, they ripped a few of my interview translations and I made a post about it. I managed to find their contact email address (with some difficulty) and contacted them and they said were given to them by another site which I won’t name. Turns it out was a misunderstanding and they promptly removed my interviews. Thank you!
Adult DMM

Verdict : The Best JAV Shopping Site Ever. Only if you live in Japan though. Excellent reference.
The best site for JAV. If you’re in Japan you’re in luck! Simply the most comprehensive and professional looking site out of them all. Prices are usually cheaper than most other JAV shops in Japan. They also have a renting service where you can rent a few videos at a time for a much cheaper price. Also services include paid direct downloads of videos and a monthly service.
Like most online shops in Japan, you can select the time you want your parcel to arrive and it comes discreetly packaged.
You cannot use foreign credit cards to obtain membership. I’ve tried it before and many others have in the past too.
Also this is the best site for JAV reference. For looking up actresses videos and finding out a name of an actress if you only have kanji, this is the best to look it up. They also get covers before they get released on JAV companies websites.
Squareplus
My Rating:
Verdict : A superior JList. Great for the latest original DVD’s, Magazines and Photobooks. Library stock and site design holds it back.
I’ve had the chance to talk to the owner of Squareplus who is Japanese and he writes very good English! He’s very interested in promoting JAV products overseas and he’s sponsoring Sweatpig.
This is one of the only shops actively selling JAV products to a western market. Squareplus sells original DVD’s, adult toys, photobooks, magazines, hentai comics and adult figures at prices cheaper than JList. There are a ton of the latest DVD’s and a small library of Magazines and photobooks and a very small collection of adult toys. They do have the popular Tenga fake vagina in stock. You can also request specific titles if you can’t find what you want in stock.
The website could use alot of work such as being able to click on an actress and have her videos shown etc, and looks a bit amateurish but the company is still very young and I know Goro is working on it hard.
Pornograph

Verdict : Excellent, high quality, Original Videos and Photos for download. Some content makes it onto Scanlover for free.
Pornograph has very high quality original video and picture content only provided online. Pornograph just oozes sex appeal with large inviting pictures of sexy girls. You’ll see alot of girls you haven’t seen before and then you’ll see girls you’ve seen before coming here to make exclusive content. They don’t use full names only first names and some recognizable stars may adopt different names just for this occasion.
The good news is, they accept foreign credit cards! (Last time I checked, about 3 years ago). I signed up with them for about three months and had no problems. There’s nothing more exciting then going through this site and downloading at your own leisure.
I’ve again signed up for this site and will make an update on Pornograph. Some minor things have changed.

Verdict : First class high quality, UNCENSORED Bukkake and Creampie Videos and Photos for download. Very expensive. Requires License to watch videos.
I signed up for the 30-day membership for $19.00 USD a couple of years ago and once that expired, didn’t bother going back. Let me explain why further down.
If you like uncensored JAV and like bukkake and creampie themes, you will really enjoy these. I do very much. They have alot of very attractive girls getting creampied for real, unlike most censored JAV companies. Very high-quality.
Now with the bad, and these outway the good in my opinion.
1) First getting these videos is very expensive. You have to pay a $19 USD monthly membership in addition to paying for downloads. Downloads require tokens and one movie is 10 tokens which is about $10 USD. The longer membership you purchase and the more bulk tokens you buy, the lower the cost, so you can lower the cost to about $5 USD per movie.
2) If that’s not enough to blow your bubble, the videos are DRM protected. This means you need a license to watch the video. Windows media player will download the license for you and keep it onto your computer until you reinstall windows or format your harddrive. If that happens, you can’t view your videos anymore. There are programs that will strip this DRM license, so you can watch the videos freely.
That being said, they must have a good number of members to be able to support making these videos.

I was a member here for a month or so. They have an english website also but you’re best checking out both websites as they publish different content. There’s just so much good looking high quality pictures and full-length videos to download, you definitely get your money’s worth.
You can check out the XCity’s video on demand service.
Membership costs 2,992 Yen a month (around $25 USD).
They have email support in English, so if you have any problems don’t be worried about asking! I fully recommend this service.
Fleshlight
Most of the most popular and highly rated male toys on the market today. I’ve personally had one myself (the plain vanilla vagina) in my single days and it was awesome. Only downside is that it’s a little bulky and hard to store because of it’s size. Highly recommended.

JAVJunkies.com has long surpassed JAVTalk.com when it comes to sheer number of torrents…I prefer that site by now. Scanlover is good for discussion. But I don’t agree with you slagging off Asiansthetic so much. They’re in my opinion the best source for pictures. Compared to Scanlover, you can get whole picture sets zipped and sorted and recent ones are posted pretty quickly.

Yeah, but if you - like the site itself suggests - use a Firefox extension like HSNet Unlinker, you can display all linked covers in the same page with two simple clicks.
Asiansthetic may not have the same amount of pictures as Scanlover, but that’s due to most sets uploaded to sites like Rapidshare. For general wealth of images Scanlover might be better, but for new sets and more comfortable downloading of whole sets, I prefer Asiansthetic. I just think they deserve a better rating.

Yea, sure it’s filled with chinese, but it’s really easy to navigate (I can’t read chinese too). Just put in a few minutes of time and possibly Google Translate to register and you’re off. The site has more amature stuff, and less mainstream, and uses a RMVB a lot… But hey, RMVB pr0n is better then no pr0n. This is what I used before going to JAVtalk forums. Of course, most people come to your site to read english, so not quite sure it’ll be popular with the people here…

Also a pretty good site to get JAV (in english this time). It’s about as big as empornium but better interface and controls.
For example, if you want to organize by seeder/leecher on empornium, your results are really F’d up. Not on Puretna. Search is also better, I believe it uses boolean, so you can do exact searches with quotation marks. Ex. “your pornstar here” and will give exact matches; something that empornium lacks.
It’s also just a great place to get amature stuff and mainstream (NA) pr0n, great seeder to leecher ratio too.

I am fairly new at all of this and not too computer saavy so I couldn’t watch the torrent files i downloaded from JAVtalk. (I’m not sure why…) Do you have a viewer/program you prefer (or recommend)? Where can i go to easily learn more about torrents, etc.?
Cheggit and Pure Tna are way better than Empornium. I recommend Cheggit, they have the best screen there too.
Great recommendations and resources! I concur with the comments about Empornium and Cheggit. I now visit Empornium once every two weeks or so, but I visit Cheggit daily. I’ve been a member since late July 2006 and really like it.
One addition I’d like to make: If anyone wants to buy uncensored DVDs, I recommend aventertainments.com. The prices usually are in the $20 USD range. Torrents of their new DVDs usually wind up on Javtalk, Cheggit, and other forums. But if you have a favorite performer who is making the uncensored plunge, it’s always nice to have the actual DVD, and aventertainments.com is the place to get it. I’ve been buying DVDs from them for about three years and have no complaints.

Okay, I’ve just been going over JAVjunkies and I don’t agree that it “long surpasses JAVTalk in sheer number of torrents”. (In fact far from it!)
1) First JAVtalk has been around for many, many years, while JAVJunkies has been up since June 2007.
2) The guy at JAVjunkies gets his stuff from other sites such as JAVTalk, empornium etc. JAVTalk gets alot directly from chinese sites. (Assumption)
3) JAVTalk has more torrents than JAVjunkies for the above reason. There are multiple people posting torrents at JAVTalk as opposed to one guy.
Regarding the firefox plugin. It doesn’t work for later versions of Firefox (version 2+). I managed to install it, but it didn’t work.
Also, while some may prefer holding the mouse cursor over each text link and waiting for the image to download and show up, JAVTalk has a better, streamlined solution.

Fact is you don’t need to click on every single image to use the plugin on JavJunkies, you click on “Unlink all” (Or something like that) and it shows every image on the site.
I’ve got Firefox 2.x too and had some problems installing it but it eventually worked just by downloading it from JAVJunkies directly.
And yeah in total JAVTalk may have more torrents…but BananaBoy has been posting irregularily recently and I think regarding bigger studio releases JAVJunkies at the moment posts these more frequently. And sometimes they’ll also show up on JAVJunkies days before they’re posted on JAVTalk.
All this probably sounds like I’m affiliated with JAVJunkies, haha…which I’m not. Just in my opinion JAVTalk isn’t the end-all resource anymore it once used to be. Also because the amount of highly childish and immature posts/threads has increased there as of late.
After going through JAVJunkies yesterday and today, I’ve finished my review and it’s up now.
I think downloading the plugin from Mozilla stuffed up my plugin so I need to uninstall it before trying the one on JAVJunkies again.
Personally, JAVtalk is enough for me, I just don’t have enough time in the day with 2 jobs and three websites to update everyday (and a wife to keep happy)! I’m on holiday now which is why I can update this site as much as I have these past few weeks but I’m rambling on now…

I am a new fan of JAV porn - I actually work in the American porn industry as a photographer and webmaster. A colleague showed me Maria Ozawa a couple of months ago and I got hooked on her and started looking for more JAV idols.
I have lots of questions about the JAV scene and this great site seems to be a good place to start. I have looked at a bunch of English language JAV paysites - including Jsexnet and Actionjav - it is very easy to see that these paysites are just taking the movies and photos from the JAV studios without permission or payment. Because I own my own websites and produce my own content at great expense of time and money I won’t join a site like that. The problem is that the sites that look legitimate are only in Japanese or very poorly translated English.
In the US producers are very protective of their copyrights, of course with torrents it’s impossible to do much but I am curious why the JAV studios don’t try to get paysites who are using their movies and photos closed down. They dont seem to care because i see that Actionjav alone has over 6000 DVD movies from biggest studios in Japan.
Also, is there a way to contact JAV idols or their managers directly? I see many girls have blogs but I can’t read Japanese. Also I find it very odd that top JAV Idols only have these little blogs - in American girls have whole members only websites.
Lastly, from my reading about JAV, it says the reason for the mosaic is that it is a serious crime in Japan to shoot explicit genitalia content. So are these companies that are shooting the uncensored full hardcore movies ever arrested and put in jail over there? I also read that if a JAV Idol does do an uncensored movie she loses her status as a top JAV Idol actress. True?
Are there any legitimate paysites in English with legal JAV movies?

I’m impressed by how comprehensive this list of JAV sources is. Very good comments as well and I agree with most of them.
I’m Banana Boy and one of the frequest torrent posters on JAVTalk. I’m a contributor and a moderator of the forums but I’m not an administrator. As such I can’t give reasons why JAVTalk’s policy towards mentioning other retail sites is the way it is. However, since their only source of income comes from sales on Asianscreens.com and member donations, I’m sure they’re focused on paying off the costs of hosting JAVTalk which I imagine is considerable given the amount of traffic. Although it’s been considered in the past, JAVTalk has no banner advertising. There are links to Asianscreens.com sprinkled throughout the site but nothing that gets in the way of the content.
I checked out JAVJunkies today based on Mr. Pig’s tout.
Pros: They seem to post about 20-50+ torrents daily. There were some files which I had not seen posted on JAVTalk but I didn’t see any glaring omissions. Their translations were generally very good, some surprisingly close to my own (hmmm.)
Cons: The layout of the site wastes a lot of space. I’m not opposed to aesthetics in web design but I’d prefer if the site worked properly and didn’t sacrifice functionality over style. The large image on the left and the banner ads are persistent throughout and distract from the content. The torrent postings come solely from the site’s webmaster(s) so there are no user submitted torrents. Different from JAVTalk where there’s a community of torrent posters, not a reliance on just a few. The torrent postings themselves lack information I find important, namely the production studio and the file format or codec. While the site does distinguish between DVD and other files, you don’t know if you’re getting a Real Media file, a WMV or DivX until you download the torrent and examine the contents.
JAVJunkies is a young site and if they can keep up the pace I think they can serve as a good resource for double checking the list of available torrents. However, if one were to rely solely on JAVJunkies, I think they’d be missing a lot of varied AV content and a whole lot of other information that a community forum like JAVTalk provides.

Lots of good questions! For whatever reasons, Japanese adult video studios are generally only interested in domestic sales and rental revenue. They generally don’t take legal action against bootleggers or resellers of content. Piracy of video content is so prevalent in Asia that it’s accepted as part of the cost of doing business. One DVD leaked to China or Taiwan can easily become a million copies overnight and make its way around the world within hours. It’s not a question of apathy, but rather an acceptance of the fact from a legal standpoint, it’s very difficult for an AV production company to do anything to stem the tide as the laws there are either not being actively enforced or written such that they have no teeth.
As I’ve said, AV producers don’t seem to see the need to expand their market outside of Japan. They don’t offer many ways for AV fans outside of Japan to obtain their products in a legal manner. Take DMM.co.jp for example, maybe the biggest online retailer of adult goods. They also offer a Netflix style DVD rental service plus video on demand and downloadable Window Media files for a fee. But only in Japan; you need a Japanese credit card and address to use even their online content. That’s not to say you can’t buy DVDs legitimately from J-List and Squareplus for example. I’ve done so many times but selection is limited and the markup is what some might call exorbitant.
Most AV actresses have representation. Occasionally they will link to their agency on their blogs but some of the big ones are Ion Promotions, Prime Agency, T-Powers, and Lotus Group. As you said, all of the communication is in Japanese but perhaps if you can speak in very plain English or get someone to translate a short letter they might respond. If you’re looking to photograph some AV starlets, and I’d be very happy to see the those, you might want to contact Kim Mizuno who is a photographer for Playboy and has actually had photo books of AV actresses published in Japan. Regarding uncensored movies, a lot of companies that produce and distribute the uncensored videos operate outside of Japan but there are still quite a few which operate inside of Japan’s borders which have never come under the scrutiny of the law. Every few years, the police will bust into a few video stores selling or showing uncensored titles. But retail outlet in Japan are rare and so most companies dealing in underground AV do so by mail order or the Internet.
Legitimate sites for AV movies are limited but start with xcity.jp which lets you view video on demand with a site membership. They’ll also sell you DVDs shipped from Japan through their Joyclub retail site. Refer to the retails sites in this list if you’re interested in purchasing more AV titles.
Reading your review for Javjunkies, I have to disagree with your ‘Cons’
Amount of torrent usually match Javtalk, the reason you see more at javtalk is because of reposting (hard to filter out since many post at the same time) Might agree on the uncensored torrent, but recently there been alot listed on that site.
You are also TOTALLY wrong about them hotlink images from dmm. Javtalk and others does that, not javjunkies. I’m not sure if you miss understood the term hotlinking, but hotlinking is linking the image directly onto the site, where you can actually see said image. Javjunkies is linking only, hence not stealing any bandwidth from dmm.
I like the list, but could you put a extra tag to differentiate pay site from non-pay sites? You got my hopes up on some, only to find out I had to pay to view.

I shoot for two well known American teen magazines, Barely Legal and Tight Mag, for Met-Art and a lot of well known American teen websites. I’d love to shoot some of these JAV girls but I have a feeling that the JAV studios they are contracted to aren’t interested in marketing their talent to the Western world. I bet some of the girls would like the exposure though in America.

I count different file types as unique. So an AVI, RMVB and DVD is three videos. Not everyone wants to download AVI files. I see more missing from JAVJunkies than I do at JAVTalk whilst both have videos not found on the opposing site.
Amount of uncensored are still less than JAVTalk. There are no Tokyo-hot videos at JAVJunkies for instance. (well there was one video from tokyo-hot)
I should have made it more clear regarding the hotlinking. If you use the firefox plugin suggested by JAVJunkies then yes it’s hotlinking. Even without direct linking of images there’s clearly thousands of direct links to DMM, either way a lot of bandwidth DMM will have to pay for. (Hey not that I care!, just wondering if DMM is going to do something in the future, if JAVJunkies gets more popuar and definitely will)

well no that’s still not hotlinking. Hotlinking is when a webmaster shows/embed an image on their site from another site directly. Using a plug-in to show images on a page is not hotlinking. That plug-in will display images regardless where it’s hosted.
Now, Javtalk is the one hotlinking their images from DMM as well as other companies. You can’t tell because it doesn’t show the link, just the image (that’s the definition of hotlinking) Hate to single out bananaboy, but all his post contains DMM hotlinked images. I would imagine Javtalk affecting DMM traffic more than any other site due to the amount of users they have.
Maybe it’s a misunderstanding of terms, but I just found it bias to single out Javjunkies for something they’re not doing while others are.

Are you indeed right about JAVTalk using up way more DMM bandwidth. Sorry for any misunderstanding caused but I have no bias, I’m not affiliated with any torrent sites. In fact, I don’t like the way they handle things there (mentioned in the review of JAVTalk) and I would rather stick to Scanlovers and JAVJunkies but the get an awful lot of traffic that I want to exploit and direct to my site. I would actually prefer torrents not be available, but that’s another story. I do need a standard to compare all these sites too and JAVTalk fits the bill, I should have actually checked JAVTalk too!

Wow, I have to ask you to elaborate on that. I’m an old guy. I’ve watched American porn since 1977 (before the VCR!). I “discovered” JAV about five years ago. I’ve been blown away by how much better it is than the American stuff. U.S. porn took a turn into Skanksville sometime in the late 1980s and never recovered.
I sample the American BTs on Cheggit regularly. For every American girl worth watching I can count 10 JAV idols I prefer. What American studio comes close to matching SOD’s creativity or Dogma’s inspired depravity? Production values? Have you seen the more ambitious movies by the Attacker crews? They crank those out every month. And let’s not forget, of course, where bukkake comes from. You might be right about S1, but I watch very few S1 movies.
JAV evolved beyond the cheap, non-lighted sets, shaky single camera setups and jumpcutting just a few years ago. They didn’t care for camera angles or whether the viewer will actually see something at first. I like when porn is a bit erotic and tastefully done, more like an actual movie. JAV has only recently to come to a point where directors and production crews actually film a bit more carefully. I don’t need stuff to be as “authentic” as possible, nor do I need frequent genital close-ups, so of course in the US there’s also the gonzo stuff which is more like that but I don’t like it.
And note that I was talking explicitly about production values and camerawork. The Japanese actresses ARE better and I also stated that in my post. But I think mainstream US porn is still filmed in a much cleaner, more aesthetically pleasing way. Of course there are some studios who totally exaggerate it, with tons of idiotic filters applied to the picture, slow-motion and shitty music. I like a certain mid way between the extremes. In my opinion European porn often gets it just right.
Also, even in JAV mainstream there are things that put me off, like the constant use of those weird vibrators which come out of nowhere and are held apathetically against the vagina like they expect the girl to have an orgasm instantly. That kind of stuff really turns me off and I’d be happy to see a Japanese AV actress in a film without oddball fetishes like that.
neochaos: Good points all. I can’t speak about JAV prior to around 2002-03, although I own most of Kurumi Morishita’s movies that she made for SOD from 1998 to 2001. I still prefer JAV in all respects, but to each his own. One thing about JAV that I hope you’ll agree is superior to American porn: No shots of the guy’s face! I can’t tell you how many times a good wank was spoiled by the sudden closeup of some guy’s ugly mug at the most inopportune moment.
Well not that you get me wrong, because I sure as hell don’t prefer US porn. I just think that both JAV and US porn have their respective advantages and disadvantages, and combining them might lead to something especially good.

Not true that AV performers are necessarily interested in US exposure, and that’s a good thing. It’s likely that even the most attractive, well known AV peformers would get little more than a shoulder shrug and 6 months to a year of work before going back home. I could go on a long explanation, but US audiences aren’t as open minded as you’re guessing. The top girls will likely never make as much here as they can in Japan, and they don’t have to learn a new language or leave home to do it. Here, they’re exotic, thus serving a “niche” market = little work.
There are always a few girls who are interested in working in the US and have tried (Myu, a girl who has worked with Ed Powers and a few web sites, but never took off here, is still well known in Japan, Mai Hoshino also worked with Ed, Fujiko Kano, basically a B level performer in Japan and did a few gonzo vids in the US before people lost interest, non-starters like Jun Kusanagi, who was on Danni’s HD once).
KINK Ent has done a joint production with an AV company. If you just have a bee in your bonnet to shoot AV models, your best bet would be to do what KINK did, go to the source. Independent performers like you mentioned (ex. Riko Tachibana) aren’t beholden to any one AV company, it’s their management that would make the call.

I’ve had good experiences buying from a site called All Japanese XXX DVD. They are based in Japan, speak good English, and will go looking for any DVD not listed on their site. Videos are sold at cover price, and shipping fees are reasonable. Good customer service too.
Re. file-sharing networks, the ones with the most JAV are probably OpenNap, WinMX, BitTorrent, Share and eMule in roughly that order. OpenNap is the home of the biggest Japanese collectors and rippers. The files on the other networks seem to be mostly reposts from OpenNap, and so they have less. WinMX is the network with the largest number of JAV collectors. The JAV on BitTorrent seems to come mostly from Chinese reposters, although BitTorrent does have a niche following in Japan. Share has the third largest number of JAV collectors in Japan after WinMX and BitTorrent. eMule kind of serves as a repository for files downloaded off BitTorrent by Chinese and Korean JAV collectors. There are English versions of Utatane (OpenNap) and Share for those who want to take a look at what these networks have to offer.

JAVKING: I’ve used XVN about six or seven times in the past month. It’s outstanding. The fact that it has lots of old videos is a plus in my book. Euro pricing hasn’t been a problem for me (I’m in the United States). I just plug in my credit card number, hit the submit button, and within seconds I’m ready to download.
